U.S. Power Market Transformation
Wholesale electricity markets have seen declining demand, a dramatic injection of cheap gas and growing penetration of low-cost wind and solar.  Meanwhile, system operators and states have begun tinkering with market structures, including implementing new technology-specific subsidies and redesigning capacity markets. How will these changes affect the market? Will business models need to change, or will market design? And, in what way will the new administration affect this?

Technologies & Markets Deep-Dive | Evolution of U.S. Gas Markets & Pricing
North American natural gas markets have gone through an almost unimaginable shift in the past 10 years. The onset of the shale revolution has dropped production costs and re-plumbed the entire pipeline network to transform the U.S. into a net exporter of natural gas. To put into perspective, over the past 10 years as production has increased by over 20 Bcfd to 72 Bcfd, the U.S. natural gas trade balance has gone from importing 12 Bcfd to becoming a net exporter on select days this past winter. The question we aim to answer is whether North American natural gas is cost-effective to become an integral component of global gas trade.

Customer Deep-Dive | Gas to Power: Global Gas Consumers & Demand
Piped gas at $3/MM BTU in the US is relatively cheap and enabling a boom in gas power plant run times and construction. LNG in Asia at $8 is constraining gas use. However US LNG export capacity will double in 2017 and we expect imports in Asia (ex-Japan, Korea, Taiwan) to increase by 42% by 2020. What opportunity does increased LNG imports and other gas supply improvements present for gas-to-power solutions meeting base & peak demand, displacing coal in the US around the world? And how will this be affected by power demand and renewables?

Region Deep-Dive | Alberta: How Will Power Market Reforms and a Fossil Fuel Revival Affect New Investment?

As Canada moves to curb emissions in line with its Paris Agreement pledge, Alberta is pursuing a power market reform, which will require $25 billion of new investment in electricity generation over the next 14 years, eliminate nearly 6GW of coal generation, ramp up renewable deployment, and launch a new capacity market.  How does Alberta, whose economy has historically depended on oil & gas production, balance these reforms and broader emission-reduction goals with reviving the fossil fuel industry? Key stakeholders will discuss what these divergent developments mean for new energy investment in Alberta, the outlook for wholesale & retail power prices especially in response to Alberta's new Renewable Electricity Program, and Alberta's low-emissions future.

How Will EVs & Intelligent Mobility Impact the Energy Industry?
Global EV sales grew 55% in 2016, while the number of EVs on the roads is expected to pass the 2m landmark as early as Q1 2017. In 2030, BNEF estimates more than 30m new EVs will be sold annually. Those 30m EVs will demand over 500TWh of electricity and displace more than 3.5m barrels per day of crude oil. Advances in connectivity, sensor technology and computing power are transforming how energy is used the way people and goods move. In this panel we will discuss the likelihood – and path – of this EV and mobility revolution, while focusing on the implications for energy companies, utilities, automakers and technology developers.

What is the direction of travel for the electricity grid, what challenges can technologies such as storage help overcome, will parts of the network become redundant, and how will regulation support affordable delivery?

Summit Luncheon hosted by SUNGROW | Maximizing ROI for the Solar Industry
Driven by the constant quest towards lower system costs and higher power yields, technology manufacturers have always charted the course of innovation in the solar industry. Equipment and component suppliers have been the largest investors in R&D which has been critical to lowering costs and generating greater returns. Sungrow, the company which launched the world’s first 100kW+ string inverter—and the first to be rated at 1500vdc—is a prime example of how manufacturers are paving the future for the entire industry. The company has 30% of its workforce involved directly in R&D and is the world’s only inverter supplier to offer both central and string inverters rated at 1500vdc. With the backbone of the company being focused on innovation and product development, Sungrow now has over 38GW deployed in over 50 countries. At this lunch, senior executives from Sungrow will share some of their most exciting stories of innovation and how technological advancement drives real impact on the business side of solar.

Solar: The Home Field Advantage
Leading solar companies reaped the benefits of vertical Integration within an otherwise fragmented Industry.  But fierce competition and diminishing value threatens to invert the leading providers' business model from a competitive advantage to a costly liability.  Where's the 'value' in the solar business, can vertical integration among pure-plays still generate a profit or are other forms of innovation, integration and product now prerequisite?  How will the Industry evolve and whichh organizations will grasp the peripheral opportunities?  How long will solar companies remain just solar companies?

Technologies & Markets Deep-Dive | Distributed Energy Resources and the Virtual Grid
The transformation from a centralized to decentralized energy system – including rooftop solar, behind-the-meter storage, smart EV charging, and controllable loads – brings a new dynamic to the distribution grid. What are the challenges and opportunities associated with an increasing penetration of these distributed energy resources (DERs)? What role does new software have to play in developing and managing DERs? How will new technologies support DER investment, operation of the grid, and new business models? Are virtual power plants the building blocks of tomorrow's electricity system and will new entrants own the platform, or can utilities retain control?

This session will zero in on the chain reaction ignited by high solar penetration in California: midday spark spread erosion, exaggerated evening super-peak pricing, ancillary service rate eruption, better battery economics, worse solar economics, implications for utilities' time-of-use retail rate structures, and the extent to which demand response, storage and EVs can benefit while mitigating mayhem imposed by the merit order effect. Ultimately, this panel uses California as a case study to understand what happens to wholesale signals when renewables take a big bite out of net load.

Region Deep-Dive | Do Renewables Necessitate a Power Market Re-design?
Through the merit order effect renewables undermine their own economics. This renders grid parity a moving target that may never hit, if penetration keeps climbing. Is this an artifact of manmade flaws in power market design, or does it highlight a deep and unfortunate inferiority of intermittent output? Brace yourself. By finding consensus (or discord) over a 'fair' assessment of the 'value' of renewable energy, we hope to anticipate policy changes that could impact the way power plants get paid.
