Technologies & Markets Deep-Dive | Distributed Energy Resources and the Virtual Grid
The transformation from a centralized to decentralized energy system – including rooftop solar, behind-the-meter storage, smart EV charging, and controllable loads – brings a new dynamic to the distribution grid. What are the challenges and opportunities associated with an increasing penetration of these distributed energy resources (DERs)? What role does new software have to play in developing and managing DERs? How will new technologies support DER investment, operation of the grid, and new business models? Are virtual power plants the building blocks of tomorrow's electricity system and will new entrants own the platform, or can utilities retain control?
